Oh man! These stories are heartbreaking. And even though you'd set us up to expect that your father wouldn't show up, you ended it as abruptly and brutally as he did. A knife in the heart! Masterful and devastating.

Heartbreaking story, Richard. Those childhood losses are so charged. They last a lifetime, and no matter how successful you get, there's still that hole called "father."
