I love this. For me, memories of mornings on Cumberland Island. That sweet song, far better than an alarm clock.

Poetic and informative, Richard. I enjoyed reading about your Carolina Wren.

Given its latin name, you could have called him your Louisiana Wren. I had to look him up on the French page of Wikipedia. They refer to Carolina Wrens as Troglodyte de Caroline. Of course this immediately took me back to my only encounter with the Troglodyte people in Montesquieu's Lettres persanes:

LETTRE XI.

Olivier, good old Montesquieu! It used to be the thing back then to write those kinds of imaginary letters. Why doesn't anyone do that anymore. Troglodyte was the first classification. Funny, because as far as I know, they are not cave dwellers. Do they have them in France? Bonne Noël!

Hi Richard, not a great connaisseur of birds but enjoyed your story. Not sure whether you have many birds in the Bois de Boulogne! We will see in april next year.

Yes, let's explore that! Your place is not too far away, is it, Philippe?

They are lovely little birds.

I first learned of them from one of my teachers at UNC, a noted historian and also an enthusiastic birder, still going at age 100! Every time I see or read about a Carolina wren I think of him, so thanks for this reminder.

It's amazing how one little bird can link people! The one thing I didn't add was that this animal, unlike some upright-walking kinds I know, does absolutely no harm. I wish you and Joe and great holiday. I look forward to seeing you again!
